SAP EP 6.0 Performance on HP-UX

Hello,

My company wants to use a Sap Portal for a business-network-project. Our problem is the performance of the EP 6.0 . It was installed on a HP-UX Server, but it is very slow. We found several sap notes for performance tuning, but they didn’t solve the problem. Some “clicks” in the portal needed a few minutes.

Maybe someone has experience with the SAP EP 6.0 on Unix. It would be helpful ,if someone can send me his properties-files or a list, in which scripts he maintain which memory parameter.

Maybe our server is just to slow?

I am sure, I made something wrong, or there is a sap performance note I didn’t recognize.

For your information here are our Portal Version and our Server :

J2EE Engine 6.40 PatchLevel 87289.311

Portal 6.0.9.0.0

KnowledgeManagementCollaboration 6.0.9.0.0 (NW04 SPS09)

Server: Typ L3000 mit HPUX Version 11.11 : 8GB RAM und 4 CPU's mit 750Mhz

Thank you,

Nils Kloth

    Hi Nils,

there is also Guide in the How-to section about tuning the Network Performance.

For example we used a too called jsmin in order to reduce the size of the javascript files (but be sure to make a backup of the original files be4 running it).

    Best regards,

    Jochen

We're running our production EP6 SP9 system on a similar platform. HP 11.11 and Oracle 9205.

We presented our production setup at ASUG '05. Post your e-mail and I can send you all or relevant parts of the presentation.

    Hi Nils,

I think you should tune your system based on "Fine tune performance of NW04 EP 6.0 on WebAS 6.40" as referred in SAP Note #772752. It cover basic tuning of JVM (Memory setting), log file settings.

Once you have done with recommended setting, you can go ahead with next step as single user vs. multi users/load testing environment.

You start with single user in LAN environment (both browser and EP server are in the same location) and try out whether single user test is acceptable or not. It will eliminate network time being. If it is fine but end user response is slow when you access over WAN, you may need to into network side which includes your whole network layer - proxy, load balancer, etc. You may need to enable compression at EP side or set static file expiration.

However, I would go step by step

    1) Tune the system based on recommendation - SAP Note - 772752.

    2) Single user in LAN

    3) Single user in WAN - will capture if it is network related or not

    4) Multiple/Concurrent users in LAN - Whether it is any resource contention or not - Garbage Collection (GC), DB Pool, File access, DB access, etc.

    5) Multiple/Concurrent users in WAN - Both resource and network.

    Thanks,

    Swapan

Nils: couple of minutes for some links sounds way too bad even if there are poorly tuned settings. Is the server dedicated for EP or is there anything else running on it? You quoted the EP version, what database are you running? Is the database performing as it should? What is the load of the server when the portal is performing badly, eg. use the "vmstat" command or something similar to find out. Is the network connectivity working properly? Check with "netstat -i" and "netstat -p tcp -s" to see if there are any sevear problems.
