Scheduling project with WBS determines deates

Hellow all,

my scenario:

1. WBS determines dates

2. Method: Top - Down

3. 4 levels hierarchy of WBS's

4. Basic dates are maintained at Project definition level

5. Basic dates are maintained at WBS level 2 only (WBS level 3 and 4 basic dates with no values)

6. Activity networks are assigned to WBS level 4

now for the question:

When I schedule the project, the system use basic dates for schedule from the project definition, anyway, I expected the system behavior to use WBS level 2.

when basic dates are maintained at WBS level 4 then system use those dates, however, for my opinion, if no value is appear at 4 level then system should look for values at level 3... and so on... till Project definition level.

can anyone please explain me the rationale that stand behind this behavior?

Dates maintained ar Project Def level aslways have highest priority for scheduling. Normally at PD level, you enter either start or finish date(not both, untill and unless you want to fix the project schedule at highest level).

Date(s) entered at Project Def level are the dates on which project must start or finish. Taking the same information, WBS elements try to schedule the project.

In Top-Down method, you are fixing dates at top level and want all low level WBS elements to follow the same set of dates. While in Bottom-Up, you want scheduling at upepr level WBS to consider lower level WBS dates and so on.

Dear Nir,

Things depend on WBS Scheduling profile chosen and its detail in config.

In top down approach

1. Basic date will be maintained for all WBS elements.

2. In top town approach- Maintain it at top level, underlying will pick them.

3. Basic dates will be same for all WBS and inherited from top WBS.

If still any issue then pls clarify.
