Automatic Refresh issue with Xcelsius and Live office

Hello Gurus,

We are currently using the following architecture. We create Web intelligence Reports on top of universes. We pull these reports using Live office 3.1. We built a Dashboard using these reports using Xcelsius 2008 sp3 fix pack 3.5. Our dashboard has 4 views 1)Daily for current month 2) monthly for last 12 months 3) quarterly and 4) Yearly and all 4 views are in different Dashboards. All the Webi reports are scheduled to refresh at 9:am on daily basis and this is happening perfectly.

The issue is that some of the Reports in the Daily view (About 15 out of 30 reports in daily view ) are not updated when i open the Dashboard in the infoview. All the reports are scheduled and refresh regularly in Infoview. But only these few reports arent getting updated on the Dashboard. We have to manually open the xlf file, refresh all reports in live office using Refresh all reports option and then upload it back for daily use. Can anyone help with this issue ?

The connections in Data->Connections part of xlf are successfully created with correct web services url. IF in case there is a version mimatch, how come only few reports arent getting refreshed.

Pls help. Thanks in advance. Do let me know if you need mroe information.

Hi,

Can you please check that all the Live Office Connections in Data -> Connections section in Xcelsius has the property "Refresh Before components are loaded" or if you are using a refresh button, could you please check that all this connections are include in the list of available connections of the button?

Another thing that you can check is if in the live office properties, for these objects the refresh setting is set to the latest instance.

Hope this helps.

Hi Esteban,

Thanks for your response! I have already done the following troubleshooting

1) All the Live office Data->Connections section have the property "Refresh before components are loaded"

2) I even used a refresh button on the Dashboard and checked all the connections in the list. When i clicked on this refresh button once the Dashboard was has initialized, only some of the reports in the Dashboard are refreshing successfully. About 15 reports not refreshing at all even after the connection refresh button is pressed.

3)All the live office object properties have been set to Latest instance from any user by default. But that didnt work. I even changed these settings to "On demand" but that didnt work too.All the Webi reports are defaulted to refresh on open.

4) I opened a new excel sheet and Out of the 15 reports that werent getting refreshed in the Dashboard, i simply imported one report from Webi using live office and created a simple graph on it and created connections and exported it to infoview. When i open the Dashboard, That single report isnt refreshing too . at first i thought maybe the load on dashboard could be an issue but even when the Dashboard has a single report!, it isnt refreshing!

Do share your input! Thanks!

And one more observation i want to add is that when i open the xlf file and go to Live office-> refresh all reports, all the reports in the dashboard successfully refreshed and i have the latest data. When we do it manually its happening correctly so this means that the connections are all fine i guess. But this is not happening automatically! We currently do this manual activity every day for this one dashboard so that users get the latest data!

Appreciate any insight into this! thanks

Hello,

The problem occurs only in the InfoView? If you use the preview button in Xcelsius the same behavior happens?

The user that you are using to view the Dashboard in the InfoView is the same that you use in the settings of live office connections when you refresh it on demand? This user has all the privileges over the reports, universes and connections involved? Could yo please try with a user like "Administrator"?

Kind Regards

Hello,

The problem occurs both when i log on to Infoview as well as when i preview the Dashboard locally only difference being When i do it locally, it asks me login credentials.

I logged onto CMC just now. Went to Users and Groups and found my username. The MEMBER OF property says that I am member of Administrators, Everyone and Universe Designer Users

Hello,

Well, if you use the same user in the Live Office settings in Xcelsius when everythings works fine, we can discard that is a security problem.

You can try installing Adobe Content Debugger in Xcelsius machine and then preview the dashboard in order to see if some problem occurs.

http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html

On the other hand, you can install fiddler in Xcelsius machine and monitoring the traffic when you refresh the dashboard using the preview. You should see all connections and if a problem with one of these occurs.

http://www.fiddler2.com/fiddler2/15

Hope this helps

Thanks Esteban. I installed fiddler and i previewed my dashboard which has two LO connections. I can see about 5-6 web session entries in Fiddler. Any idea as to where i should be looking for debugging ? Should i be looking at Text view section in Inspectors tab? Any information on how to effectively use Fiddler will be of great help. Thanks!

Thanks a great deal! I was able to figure out fiddler. Fiddler shows that my live office has pulled 22 days of data but my dashboard is still showing only 20 days of data when there actually should be 22. Is this a cache problem? Any insight into this please ?

Hello,

I´m glad that Fiddler help you to identify the problem. If your dashboard is going to the latest instance, you can generate a new one and check that this one has the latest data.

If the latest instance didn´t get the latest data, or if you are going on demand, in order to discard that the problem is a cache issue, you can reboot "WebIntelligenceProcesingServer".

If this didn´t work, you need to check the cache in your source.

Kind Regards

Hi Esteban,

I restarted the Webintelligence processing server and that didnt help. Can you please elaborate on what you meant by "you need to check the cache in your source" ?

The latest upto date data is pulled into the live office object according to fiddler but not updated on the dashboard. Could this be a live office and xcelsius compatibility issue or An excel issue ? Current versions i am using are

1) Xcelsius Enterprise : 5.3.5.0 Build : 12.3.5.1128

2) Live office 3.1 Build no 12.1.0.882

i cant help but discard this because some of the reports in the same dashboard are successfully refreshed while others arent. Is there any live office cache or Xcelsius cache ?

Appreciate your advice on this. Thanks!

Hi Esteban,

I checked Live office ->Application options-> Refresh on document open and previewed the Dashboard. The Dashboard then showcased latest data for all the reports. What does this option in live office mean? If i exported the swf file to infoview now, will it fetch me the latest data everytiime open the dashboard in infoview.

PROBLEM SOLVED.

Thanks Esteban for your advice. I was able to figure out the problem with fiddler. The problem is with data grid in the Xcelsius->Data Connections->Live office connections. Once i created the connections, the data grid takes the webi block currently in the excel. when we open the document the next day, one more record is being added but the data grid isnt increasing to one more row. We manually selected data grid to the largest data set possible which is 31 rows for 31 days.

Phew!!

Thanks!
