Upgrading from portal 6.0 to 7.3 - Question

Dear all:

We are planning an upgrade from portal 6.0 on NW6.4 ECC5.0, to portal 7.3 and ECC 6EHP5. We have had different recomendation regarding the portal version that we should move into, we have some ESS Java applications modified and we are afraid that we wont be able to run those anymore in 7.3. We know that we at least should reapply the changes after the upgrade, but the question is if apart of that we will run into other issues. We also were told that the stable version for java and the like is 7.02, and we should move into that one for our technical upgrade.

Any recommendation, tip or experiences on this matter is really appreciated,
