In my experience, no. However SD is one area in SAP that leverages a lot of customizing options (exits and other new enhancement options) where each level of ABAP knowledge you gain will help you in the marketplace and to deliver solutions to the customer. You can easily do SD work without ever touching code, but almost every SD person I have worked with has some experience with this and it gives them an edge over others.
