sap gui 720 on Windows 7

Hi,

I recently upgraded to Sap Gui 720 (Patch Level 7) on Win 7. The installation goes through successfully and was able to open the logon pad. However while closing the application, I get a Windows Program Compatibility Assistant pop up stating that the program might not have installed properly. This happens only during upgrade when older version of Sap Gui 710 is already present on the PC. Does not occur on fresh install on Win 7. Did anybody else see this before? Are there ways to prevent the PCA from popping up (We plan to do a silent push to many PCs and dont want this message). Any inputs/insights are highly appreciated!

Thanks!

    Hello Divya,

You will need to update your installation server to the latest patches in the note below

    http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/1587566

and ensure that you are also using the latest SapWUS_patch.exe too.

    Regards,

Thanks everyone for your responses! Appreciate it.

I like to mention that the installation of SAP GUI 720 runs fine on both Win XP and Win 7. However only with Win 7, when the application is started and closed the first time, the Program Compatibility Assistant pops a message "This Program might not have installed properly". Is this compatibility issue with Win 7? I notice that this happens even during fresh install of the GUI on Win 7 PC where there are no earlier versions of GUI installed.

    Thanks!

SAP only fixed issues with an upgrade install as of patch level 6. Previous installs over 710 would fail on a pretty consistent basis. I would also ask why you are using patch level 7 when patch level 11 is out on service marketplace?

Personally I think your best bet is to write an install script via Windows SMS that removes the old 710 GUI and then reboots the machine and then installs 720. We had to go that route for our 710 to 720 upgrade as we had about 50% upgrade failure rate on Windows XP on patch level 5 if we did not first remove 710.

I will be the first admit that the 720 GUI was not production quality stable when SAP made 710 EOL and was very disappointed with most of the patch levels until 5. Oh BTW Don't get me started on how patch level 6 broke most installation servers and pushed out my upgrade project.

    Take care,

    Stephen

    Divya,

Did you update WinXP systems to Win7 vs. wipe and re-install of the OS? SAPGui 7.10 was never qualified for Windows 7 below I believe Patch 12 so wondering how it got on Win7. If so .... I would suggest you perform an un-install of the existing 7.10 software and reboot before installing 7.20. I know 'technically' NwSapSetup is supposed to deal with this when doing new installs, but I have more confidence in running a separate un-install with reboot.

Un-install can be invoked locally if your users have local admin rights: C:\....\NwSapSetup.exe /uninstall /all /noDlg (email them a .cmd file or shortcut link)

    Or ...

Invoked from your installation server which then would handle admin rights needs (but un-install takes a bit longer) \\.....\Setup\NwSapSetup.exe /uninstall /all /noDlg

    Reboot when done.

    Good luck,

Thanks again for all your insights! Looks like it is a known issue with Win 7 with any new application within our environment. We willl likely be silencing PCA during installation. Closing the thread for now.
