setting chart properties with javascript

I am trying to set a chart's properties thru the set item parameters command using javascript. It works for the chart type and visibility settings, but it is not setting things like the the chart background color, plot area color and labels. Has any one been able to successfully set these properties thru javascript? It seems like a simple thing to do but it doesn't work. Thanks.
