Points Lost

Hi ,

Yesterday (11.04.2012) , i have 126 points , but right now what i see is 2 points deduced. some one pls explain me this ??/

Hi Jitendra,

The points are not actually lost.

What could have happened is either of the following.

1. Of the total 126 points you have earned, 2 points would have been earned on 12.04.2011 last year. Since SCN shows the points earned in the last one year, today those 2 points will not be taken into account as it doesn't fall in the last one year as of today.
2. Other thing would be, if someone would have liked one of your post before would have gone and Unliked the same now which will deduct the 2 points earned for his/her Like.

Also I would like to inform you that you had created documents for the queries you have posted in SCN, see http://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-24493 . Those should have been created as discussion for getting answers. Also be aware that these wrong posts would have earned you 10 points for each document.  These will get deleted at some point of time as part of moderation. At that time each 10 points will get deducted from your total earned points. So please make sure to post correctly and not get confused later.

Hi Leon,

I think I understand how the points can go up and down but yesterday I had nearly 600 points and this morning I had 408... I doubt that I gained 200 points in a single day last year (maybe I did... but that would have been a productive day!).

Also today some people have rated my most recent blog post today but I have received no points for their ratings...

I am starting to think something might have gone wrong?

Hi Simon,

I can help you here what could have happened. The possibilities here are:

1. As you said, you would have earned 200 points on a productive day.
2. You might have earned points for blogs/documents on that day.
3. The other is something that I have noticed and observed with my profile as well. If the blog is in personal space, meaning not into any of the community space in SCN, then anyone can rate your blog without logging in. In such case, when I tried to test one of my blog in personal namespace without logging in to the system, no points got granted to my reputation, instead some points got deducted. I thought it could be due to some other reasons. But now I feel so. Since you have mentioned some people had rated your blog. So I would suggest you to move all your blogs from personal space to community space.

Hi Leon,

Yes of course you are right, I think what happened is exactly point 2 above. Since in the old SCN points were given by the moderators I probably had 2 blogs reviewed on the same day by the moderator and hence the points were allocated on the same day too. That makes sense.

Now to the bit that I am still confused about... my most recent blog this blog has been rated and liked, I published it in the Events space and yet I have not accrued any points for even the creation of the blog post.... I am not sure what is going on in this case.

Hi Simon,

If you have first created the blog in the personal space(Personal weblog) and then moved to any topic space, you will not earn the contribution points(10 points). However once you moved your blog to a topic space, you will start earning feedback points. To earn the contribution points for 10, you have to create your blog in a topic space.

Hi Leon,

In this case I created the blog in the Events space but did not publish straight away since it took me a few days to write it, then I published it in the Events space when it was ready... but I still did not receive the 10 contribution points... not sure why?

It has been in the Events space since then and has been rated, liked etc... but I have not received any of those points either. So I think something is not working correctly with the system... what do you think?

Hi Simon,

You are right. Creating blogs in the Event space doesn't offer any points currently. I am not sure if it is by design or a bug. I request you to create a new discussion thread mentioning this.

First of all, I'd like to thank you Leon for stepping in in so many threads and providing a level of support that I find outstanding. I see you are an SAP employee and a moderator. You know so much about the new SCN that lately I have been wondering if you're not from SCN support. Are you? Who are you? 😉

Simon: I am sorry you have so many questions about points, it probably means that my communication hasn't been clear enough. I will publish another blog to explain such things to the community. Several things to keep in mind:

- In the past (old SCN), points for blogs, documents were allocated manually. Moderators and members of the SCN team usually assigned points in batches when they spent time moderating or working on a backlog. This is why your number of points could go up by hundreds one day. Not great if you think about the calculation of the 12-month rolling points, and how quickly it fluctuated. Now with the new SCN, points are assigned automatically and they fluctuate very often, but not by hundreds. So this is an improvement for Active Contributor recognition.

Yes, any content in your personal space doesn't get points, because it's a space meant for personal content that may not be related to SAP. If you move the content to the appropriate topic space, when it makes sense, then "feedback points" will start accruing. And vice versa: points stop accruing if you move your content to your personal space.

The Events space doesn't have points enabled, as it is the case in other spaces. Why? When we decide to enable points in a topic space, we ask ourselves the question "Can someone be an expert in this topic?" and if we say no, then there are no points in the space. Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for taking the time to explain all this to me (and yes thanks to Leon for helping me too), I think I finally understand how it all works! The point you make in the last paragraph (about some spaces not having points enabled) was the last piece of the puzzle that filled the gap in my understanding (I thought something was broken) .

I have to say however that I disagree with this approach, particularly in the context of Events. I would argue that people can be experts in Events (organizers, presenters, attendees... just to name a few) and these people could choose (hopefully will choose) to share there expertise in this area. For example someone could blog about how to organise an event (like an Inside Track), presenters could blog about presentation technique and attendees could blog about how to get the most out of events (like TechEd etc...). I think these contributions to the community would be valuable and as such people should get recognition and be able to build reputation in this space.

Also events tend to cover multiple topics so a blog about such an event may not necessarily fit nicely into a single space but be more suited to being posted in the Events space.

Anyway that is just my two cents on this topic. I think this is a very interesting discussion.
