Long login-times

Hi,

we are running BusinessObjects 3.1 SP3 on a WinServer 2008, we are still using Desktop Intelligence. When we start Desktop Intelligence and login with the administrator or user (authentication = Enterprise) it takes about 10 minutes until the login has completed!

We don't have this problem with other applications like WebI Rich Client or Crystal Reports.

It doesn't happen when we choose the "Standalone (no CMS)" authentication and login via the "Tools" menu.

What could be the reason?

Thanks!

Hi,

there are many reasons for slowness, these could include:

  • firewall
  • antivirus
  • complexity security model
  • number of users
  • authentication type
  • 2-tier or 3-tier
  • proximity to the security domain / repository
  • specification of the machine
  • clustered environment
  • outage on one of BOE host servers
  • port in use
  • auto assignment of port
  • connection properties of the universe

Regards,

H

p.s. to be elegible for fix support, customers need to be on SP04 FP4.1 or SP05.  on the SP03 codeline, FP3.7 is required for technical support, the final FP3.8 is due soon.

Hmmm... but why don't whe then have these problems with the Web Intelligence Rich Client or Crystal Reports?

We also don't have this problem when we first start Desktop Intelligence using the "Standalone (no CMS)" authentication and logging in then via the "Tools" -> "Login". No problems then, super fast login.

Hi,

Maybe the other tools are included on the antivirus exclusion list?

Standalone mode is self explanatory - the application just need to initialise and not talk to anything remotely.

very interesting point re: Tools -> login

You should use sysinternal utilities (MS) on your workstation and profile the 2 different workflows.

Then compare and contrast.

You might find that 1 entry-point (the slow one) reads/writes into a part of the registry or folder structure that isn't touched by the other workflow.

This is all purely speculative, but it's the sort task i used to do when building/testing/deploying thick client apps.

best of luck

H
