is there any requirment to install diagnostic agent on Netweaver 7.3 portal

for any alret monitroing that is done by Solman is there any requirment to install the diagnostic agent on portal to contected with solman.

is there any requirment that we need to install diagnostic agent need to be install for monitioing or any other purpose .
