Launching new window from url in Smartform

We are using Smartforms to display a pdf within ESS. On the pdf document that is displayed there is a hyperlink. When the user displays the pdf then clicks on the hyperlink url the resulting page displays in the same window that the original pdf was displayed (replacing pdf display with that of the hyperlink document). Is there a way within Smartforms to specify the url hyperlink should launch in a new window and display in that window instead of the same window the pdf is located? Also, it would be best to not require an Adobe setting/preference to accomplish this.
