Should I use SAPEHPI or SPAM?

I need to patch our ABAP only ECC system
FROM: ECC 6.0 EHP5 Patch 6
TO: ECC 6.0 EHP5 Patch 7

it unclear to me whether I should perform the patching

the old way with just SPAM and patching the kernel manually

or

whether I should use SAPs Enhancement Package Installer.

what is recommended?
