Difference between a target group and segment?

Former Member

Hi experts,

I´m very new at the topic "CRM Marketing" and currently reading some material (wiki, book, etc) regarding Marketing and trying to understand the elements and processes. Could someone please tell me the difference between a target group and a segment? What is used in the other? How do they work together? What have to be created first? Is it right that a target group are the business partners and the segment is collection of filters?

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Anna

Hi Anna,

While creating segmentation model, filters have to be applied on the main data set. After applying these filters you get a segment. this segment contains the BPs which satisfy the filter criterea.

Fron this segment you can create the final target group containing BPs by using "Define target Group" option. This target group can be used in campign. So, segment creation is the intermediate step from which target group is created in segmentation model.

Also, filters can only be applied on segments and not on target groups.

Hope this answers your query.

thanks,

Hello, Anna.

Just to clarify you with terminology. Yes, segmentation is in place. This is a process of filtering and so on. But segments are: profiles and target groups.Level 2: Node: Profile Sets. Selected. Trigger this link to expand.Proof link

Main objects are profiles sets, profiles and target groups.

Profile set is a folder for profiles and/or target groups.

Profile is a number of criteria which you've applied. In graphic modeler you create profiles by drag-and-drop.

Target group is a finite list of business partners.

You can read more on this in help article Segmentation under topics Profile Sets, Profiles, Target Groups.

Conceptually, Segmentation is a process of identifying customers/prospects based on certain specific characteristics such as Age, Gender or Geographical location. SAP CRM has segmentation builder/graphical modeler that allows a business user to start from a Segmentation basis, apply filters and arrive at a target group to send out Campaigns, as an example.
