Are their any plans on returning relevant data when an error with a web service transaction happens?
Currently many times i get
Details in WS Error Log (transaction SRT_UTIL, note 1558107) by selection with UTC timestamp 20120522144010
and I have to involve SAP.

in FP4.0 it will be possible to check the SRT_UTIL error log in the ByDesign UI:
Application and User Management (work center) -> Business Communication Monitoring (woc view) -> Message-Independent Errors (filter) -> Details
For example, in case of an XML validation error, you will find the detailed error message: "Length of "EQ" exceeds maximum length "1", specified with tt:maxLength".
Before FP4.0, only SAP admins can access the log.

This is a crash in the SAP system. Don't think there are any alternatives. Would be good if something is planned in future about this.

I'm having the same issues with my web services. So unhelpful. How have you dealt with this?
