Storage control in EWM

Dear Experts,

How can we configure Process oriented storage control and layout oriented storage control in EWM? I mean is there a specific customization node for this?

Any thought on this will be much appreciated.

For example, I want to work with only Process oriented storage control. What are the customization to be made?

Shetty

Hi Shetty,

storage control process is used to identify the stock situation exactly in side the warehouse. before the goods are placed into the storage bin they will under the process of unloading , counting , quality inspection , deconsolidation and putaway.

all these individual activities are controlled through storage process steps.

these storage process steps are grouped under one storage process.

this storage process is maintained in your warehouse process type.

most importantly this will be worked only with Handling Units.

Thanks Ramakrishna and Claudiu ,

I do understand what you are saying ...I have two queries

1) In inbound process I am using standard process type 1011 and Storage prcoess INB1 ( steps IB01 ,CNT , QIS , IB02 , IB03) .

System starts with unloading task (IB01) but then it directly creates the putaway task (IB03) . All intermediate tasks are skipped by the system...

Can you tell me the master data / config settings required to trigger these intermediate steps ??

And another query is about determination of stoarge process in warehouse task..

Can you please let me know how this Storage prcoess is determined in Warehouse task ?

Like

For Inbound process , I can see in standard system

Storage prcoess (INB1) is attached to Process type (1011) therefore I believe once the prcoess type is determined by the system in warehouse request (like Inbound delivery) , system automatically knows the prcoess he needs to follow...

Please correct me if you find me wrong

But when I look into the Outbound process , I dont see any storage process attached to 2010 or 2011... May I know how system is determining the storage process OUT1 in pick task ?

Hi Neel,

In inbound Storage process determination is done from Warehouse Process Type and in outbound Storage process assignment is done for Warehouse Order Creation Rule. so assigning the Process to WPT 2010 will never work.

Here are the steps that you need to perform to make POSC work.

Create the Storage Process

assign the process steps, check product WT indicator for IB01/IB02 and also you can make AUTO WT indicator active for IB01/IB02 if you want subsequent tasks to be created automatically by system

for each process step other than IB03, make sure you enter source and destination data. you can also check Rules based if this data in maintained in determination tables

for IB02/CNT steps, the destination data entered must be a work center, so check WC config. make sure that correct process step is assigned and storage section assignment. Maintain Bin assignment to Work center in WC master data attributes transaction is easy access

Check you WPT if you have this process assignment, create a Process type determination indicator

Determine this WPT for your Doc. type, item type and PTDI combination

Also check STSS setup to determine the destination bin.

Maintain the Process type determination indicator in the product master.

This set up will help you executing POSC in inbound.

in your case of all intermediate steps are skipped, then probably you have rules based determination active and products in the handling unit going to same consolidation group and also check if there is count document and Inspection document created for them.

if thats the case, then system behaviour is correct.

Hope this helps

Hi Neel,

in inbound process you determine the warehouse process type 1011. it means in the warehouse process type you have storage process INB1. This particular storage process is having external storage process steps (IB01,CNT,QIS,IB02,IB03). These steps is having a potentiality to create warehouse task.

These external storage process steps are linked to standadrd SAP internal storage process steps(the standard activities that will be performed).

to work with this process oriented storage control you need to pack the goods.process oriented storage control works only with HU's.To do the packing from the inbound delivery in eWM system choose from menu inbound delivery --->follow-on-function--->pack. Choose any packing material that exist in eWM system and create Handling unit. Pack the product in the HU.

Once packing is completed your HU will have the storage process(Detail 1 tab of HU).This means that your HU is relevant for storage process steps.

IB01 is the storage process step to unload the HU from the Door to staging area.(This configuration needs to be maintained in process oriented storage control).

the similar way if you want to work with count you need to config from which source storage type to which destination storage type HU needs to be moved(normall this is a workcenter).

towork with storage process step , first you need to make the system understand that the HU is relevant for deconsolidation.

in a detailed way - HU should contain the two products and these two products should go to different storage types(which can be controlled with different putaway control indicators in warehouse product master).

Once system is determined that the HU contains two products and these needs to be moved to different storage types then the process of deconsolidation triggered for the HU. Else this will not triggered.

Storage proces is determined for inbound process through warehouse process type only...

This is related to your inbound process.

where are for outbound cycle the storage process is determined through your warehouse order creation rule.

in warehouse process type there are two fields(WOCR activitty area and WO rule plays an important role in this area.

Hi Sastry ,

Sorry for the delay in response ...From your answer , I am clear about Inbound Storage Process determination from Process Type in Inbound delivery.

But for Outbound, it depends on WOCR...

It created more confusions .....

1) I can see system can determine WOCR by two ways ,

     a) Through Process Type itself as there is field for  WO Rule

     b) From the WOCR determination defined in another config Node. That config says it is    determined based on the activity area and activity code (from Process type)... Can you tell me which settings is being used in which case ??

Also when I look into the activity area , I think "WOCR Actvity Area" settings in Process type can tell system which location / bin (source / destination) should be selected to determine the Actvity Area in TASK

But in Task I can see there are two Actvity Areas fields 1) Activity Area 2) WO Activity Area .... Not sure what is the difference between the two. For most of the cases at my end , they are same.

Here are screen shot of selected fields of "process type" and "Task"

Awaiting for your response

HI Neel,

in eWM system , you are determining the source bin from where the stock needs to be picked up.(warehouse task creation based on your search strategies).Once the bin is determined,if the bin is assigned to activity pick corresponding activity area will be determined.from the configuration path(SPRO--->Extended Warehouse Management-->Cross-Process Settings--->Warehouse Order-->Define Search Sequence of Creation Rules for Activity Areas) you can find that this activity area is assigned to which warehouse order creation rule.In the warehouse order creation rule you can maintain storage process so that the system will pass the HU to the destination storage type(usually for a packing work center or VAS work center).you need to ensure the related storage process steps are configured in the system.WOCR activity area is nothing but we are saying to the system whether source bin or destination bin has to be considered for that activity.

if you see 1011 you can identify that the destination bin has to be considered and where as for process type picking the source area has to be considered.

Hello shetty,

Process oriented storage control is the most often used in EWM so good choice. Now, the POSC process is mainly a workflow if you will with steps that need to be done so as the process defined is succesfully finished. For example, a POSC for inbound would be Unloading (step IB01) after that comes Deconsolidation (IB02), Quality inspection (QIS), Packing (PACK) and afterwards Putaway (IB04). This is the typicall POSC for inbound but you can make one whichever steps you desire. The outbound POSC is like Pick, Pack, Load and Putaway. You can define your own steps and POSC following the path SPRO SCM Extended Warehouse Management - Cross-Process Settings - Warehouse Task - Define Process-Oriented Storage Control.

Also check out the Define Warehouse Process Type and Determine Warehouse Process Type from the same path. The process types you will need to take care of especially will be 1011 - Putaway with Storage Process and 2011 - Pick, Pack, Stage, Load.

A POSC is determined at product level so if you want your products to follow a POSC please assign the 01 - Storage Process Active value to the Proc.Type Det. Ind. in the Warehouse Data Tab in the product master.

Last but not least, after a step is completed in the POSC the PPF (Post Procesing Framework) will create the follow-on tasks automatically.

Please allocate enough time for the POSC customizing and implementation because there is a lot of work involved.

All the best,

Claudiu Maxim
