Production Order should be generated externally ,supress SAP's PO number

Hi all,

My client is expecting to assign Production order serial number in the format 3XXXXXXX instead of SAP generated production order number.How to suppress SAP PO serial number and use custom serial number.

I found PPCO0001 exit to be useful. But i am not sure this can be done using the mentioned exit. Can some one confirm this??
