Hi Experts,
Could you please let us know if it is ideal to use the planning cubes(BPC cubes in BI) and create queries and universe upon them and then create WEBI reports on them . Have any one come across this requirement and created the webi reports using bpc data.
Would there be any complexities or performance issues ? Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Sanjeev

Hi,
Yes, it is an increasing requirement.
it depends which version you are using obviously, but in BI 4.0 for example, you have BPC drivers/connectors in both semantic layer clients (Information Design Tool vs Universe Designer) , to connect to either BPC 7.5 or BPC 10, and for both BPC Netweaver (BW) and BPC Microsoft (MSAS) flavours, and using both MDX or XMLA interfaces.
As for "is it ideal?" well, "it is what it is" ... As a datamodeller, you will have to examine the structures of the BPC cubes, and from a reporting perspective, decide if these are appropriate in design. Sure, you can use them cubes "as-is", but they may not be 'optimized' for reporting use-case, so may require post-processing or staging into another target.
As for complexities? not really, but you cant' really plan for these , until they manifest themselves unexpectedly.
However, for example, i've heard of .UNV designers trying to create custom MDX objects with XML tags , and having a very hard time of it. (more so than a normal OLAP .unv)

I am not aware of any document that specifically addresses WebI on BPC , generally speaking you would use the same approach as to any OLAP universe, please see this whitepaper http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/boc/index?rid=/library/uuid/c0a45246-ce76-2b10-e688-f5c8206203eb&override...
