Teradata is SAP certified for UDC and, along with SAP, Teradata promotes and recommends UDC for BW 3.5 and beyond.

Additionally, they do offer a solution called TVAS(Teradata Virtual Access for SAP) that can be utilized for versions prior to 3.5. You can read all about it at the Teradata website.

http://www.teradata.com/t/pdf.aspx?a=83673&b=132235

To answer the question above..."how does it work" would be a very long write up!

Short explanation of TVAS: Teradata uses SAP's virtual cube with services which, via function module, uses SAP Jco and a stored procedure to generate the SQL(based on the query definition and the user selection) to query against Teradata and display the result set to BEX--it is very fast!

Hope this helps

Hello Scott,

do you have any experience with BW 3.5 and UDC to teradata? I'm wondering if it's as fast as you tell about TVAS? Using BW 3.5 what kind of access to teradata would you recommend, TVAS or UDC?

Hi Alex,

For SAP BW 3.5 access to Teradata the UDC solution is recommended.

Although TVAS works just fine with 3.5, I would recommend UDC as this is standard functionality supported solely by SAP. I believe this is also the joint recommendation of SAP and Teradata for customers on BW 3.5. UDC is very new and I know Teradata was also recently UDC certified by SAPlabs. I cannot offer any information regarding the speed of UDC w/ 3.5.

Thanks for your replies! I'll give UDC a go.

Another question just occurred is whether we can use RemoteCubes or if we have to store the data from teradata in BW as well. From the documentation I found I would say both ways are possible. Do you have any experience?

Hi Alexander,

How was your experience with the connection? Did you go for extraction of the data into BW or using VirtualProvider?

Thanks,

Even I heard of this tie up between Teradata and BW only recently - must be for 3.5 I guess.

Hi,

Yes, Teradata JDBC driver is certified for UDConnect BW 3.5. UDConnect is not usable on any version lower than 3.5 of BW.

If DBConnect does not work, you can always use the low-tech route: create a flat file and ftp it to the BW application server. Teradata has a utility called "BTQMAIN" a/k/a batch BTEQ. BTEQ is a batch utility that allows you to run SQL against the database and create a flat file. The "wrapper syntax" varies depending on whether you're writing a UNIX shell script or MVS JCL.

I have experience in this area. Please let me know how I can help. In a global partnership with SAP, Teradata offers an outstanding connectivity tool/solution designed exactly for this purpose. Teradata's solution works seamlessly with 3.1 and 3.5. However, if you are using a BW 3.5 system, I agree with Oliver and recommend using UD Connect. You can contact Todd Hayes directly at Teradata for more information or reply and we can discuss via email or phone.

Hello Scott,

how does your solution with BW3.1 works?

I know, Teradata delivers an SAP certified JDBC driver to connect SAP BI and Teradata via UDC with BW version 3.5 .

Hi Bharat,

If you are on thw SAP BW 3.5 release you can use Universal Data Connect to either (1) read data dynamically using a remote cube or (2) load the data into BW. More information is available here http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/78/ef1441a509064abee6ffd6f38278fd/content.htm
