Mercury (Also known as HP Quality Center or QC) simplifies the building, execution of step-by-step test scripts, and the logging of defects related to each specific test script step if testers came across any.
The logging of defects triggers a workflow item (that triggers emails as needed) that routes the defect to the resolver in categorized areas (i.e. SD, Security, ABAP, FI etc), till it makes it back to the tester to retest the failed step and pass or fail it and the test script overall.
The reporting derived from QC is very helpful in determining the progress of test execution by different areas and/or scenarios, and the overall project test cycle.
Overall the system is intuitive and allows a good degree of flexibility to adapt it to cover your purposes.
Good Luck!

dear friend,
i used this tool when i was a SD-contractor.
I did testing scenarios (step-by-step) and issues registration in Mercury.
I could say it is a good system, i haven't any difficulties to use it.
good luck!
P.S. starting that position I had NOT Mercury experience. It wasn't critiacl req from my consultancy.
