Why is SAPHOSTAGENT and saposcol not included in kernel distribution?

Hello,

We are running ECC 6.04 with WAS 7.01 and Kernel 7.01.

As it is recommended to migrate to kernel 7.20, I have read the note 1636252,

to upgrade my kernel.

It is documented that we must install SAPHOSTAGENT.SAR.

I am wondering why they have separated these few files from the kernel distribution.

1. As it is needed by the kernel, why is it shipped separately?

2. is true to say that saphostexec -install just copies binaries in exe dir and create rc/init scripts?

Or does it do something else?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Hi,

1. As it is needed by the kernel, why is it shipped separately

SAPHOSTAGENT is separated with KERNEL 7.20 because You need to install a standalone host agent, if it was not previously installed on the host with KERNEL. In Higher version of NW, SAPHOSTAGENT installed along with SAP, so no need of separate installation.

SAPHOSTAGENT consist of saphostexec, sapstartsrv, sapacosprep, saposcol which replaces your existing SAPOSCOL and other monitoring

2. is true to say that saphostexec -install just copies binaries in exe dir and create rc/init scripts?

Or does it do something else?

Yes, it creates rc/init.d scripts under /etc where you can stop and start the NW agents.

Hello,

sapstartsrv and saposcol existed already in 7.01.

But I have noticed that saphostexec and sapacosprep were not.

On our systems, we do not like to start sap on boot.

With Kernel 7.20, is sapstartsrv still started by the startsap cmd?

If it is the case, I can safely remove the rc scripts.

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Hello,

But I have noticed that saphostexec and sapacosprep were not.

SAPHOSTAGENT.SAR will replace your SAPOSCOL, SAPSTARTSRV in Kernel and places SAPHOSTEXEC and sapacosprep

With Kernel 7.20, is sapstartsrv still started by the startsap cmd?

SAPSTARTSRV starts when you reboot or start you system not by startsap command

Hello Arjun,

As I am not very familiar with SAPHOSTAGENT, I have a few more questions.

I would like to better understand this package.

1. What is the purpose of sapacos process?

Note 1031096 does not provide lots of details.

2. What does happen if I upgrade and forget to install this package?

2.1 Saposcol and SAPSTARTSRV are not started?

2.2 There is no OS monitoring and no possible SAPHOSTCONTROL possible (that's all)?

3. What does happen if I run /etc/init.d/sapinit stop?

3.1 There is no OS monitoring and no possible SAPHOSTCONTROL possible (that's all)?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Hi Benoit,

1. What is the purpose of sapacos process?

The SAP Host Agent depends on SAPACOSPrep libraries that implement the functionality to manage virtual hostnames and data storage. Libraries shipped with the Host Agent allow managing virtual hostnames for Linux and Windows, and managing NFS-based data storage for Linux.

2. What does happen if I upgrade and forget to install this package?

Nothing Happens (it is Optional Install)

SAPHOSTAGENT puts the file, but its optional to install it or not

2.1 Saposcol and SAPSTARTSRV are not started?

Your monitoring in ST06 and ST07 might not get proper data

2.2 There is no OS monitoring and no possible SAPHOSTCONTROL possible (that's all)?

With SAPOSCOL running, You still get data in St06 and ST07 but no monitoring and Alerts from Central monitoring system example Solution Manager.

SAPHostControl contains the functionality of the previous CCMS agent SAPCCMSR, that is, the agent that monitors hosts.

3. What does happen if I run /etc/init.d/sapinit stop?

It will stop all SAP NetWeaver management agents on a host

3.1 There is no OS monitoring and no possible SAPHOSTCONTROL possible (that's all)?

If you stop all the agents, yes there might not be any Monitoring

Thanks,

Arjun
