Perl CGI script to insert data in table -- data inserted always in uppercase?

I have a Perl CGI script to find and replace text in a table in an ASE database (Adaptive Server Enterprise/15.5/EBF 23119). The problem is that the replacement text is always entered in uppercase, regardless of how it is entered in the web form. Any ideas on how I could resolve this issue would be gratefully received:

The Perl CGI script connect to the database via the following driver:
ODBC ASE Driver Version
Driver ODBC Version 03.51

Some output from sp_helpsort:
Character Set = 2, cp850
Code Page 850 (Multilingual) character set.
Sort Order = 42, nocase_cp850
Case-insensitive ASCII sort order for use with Horizon Automated Library System. Can display many Western European character s in ISO 8859-1 character set.

Many thanks!
