Currently we are on BW 3.5 and have plans to work with BPS but don't know the difference between BW 3.5 BPS and SEM 4.0.
Can anybody tell / explain what are the differences between the two BPS versions and reasons for using BW BPS or SEM BPS?
thanx in advance
Tom
Hi Tom,
take a look to https://websmp104.sap-ag.de/bw in SAP BW Business Planning and Simulation -> Further Information... then check these docs:
BW-BPS: Planning with SAP NetWeaver
Bus. Planning in SAP BW 3.5 - SEM-BPS transition to BW-BPS
Enhancements BW-BPS (formerly SEM-BPS) in SAP NetWeaver 04
Hope it helps!
Bye,
Roberto
If you have installed SEM add-on already, you are on the SEM track where
BW 3.0 with SEM 3.1
BW 3.1-3.3 with SEM 3.2 or SEM 3.5
BW 3.5 with SEM 4.0
If you upgraded your BW to 3.5, if you have SEM already you have to upgrade your SEM to 4.0. No choice about it.
You can only have BW-BPS 3.5 if you have not installed the SEM add on before and only have BW. If you upgrade to BW 3.5 and get BW-BPS, you can later install the SEM add ons if you need BCS, CPM or SEM-BPS functions.
The difference between SEM-BPS 4.0 and BW-BPS 3.5 is about 10 planning functions, mostly in the financial area, that was not migrated to BW-BPS 3.5. If you need functions such as allocation or account based currency translation, you need SEM-BPS 4.0. Also BW-BPS seems to have a new forecasting function and some improved status and tracking. The full list of function differences can be found comparing documentation or from product marketing whitepapers avaiable on SDN or ASUG.
Have been using BW-BPS recently after close to 3 years of SEM-BPS and have not notices any major differences other than some more SPs and notes and the missing function which I only really miss allocation but can work around with copy, distribution and delete.
Hope this helps,
Mary
