Testing for kernel updates

Hi all -

What level of testing do you typically perform for a kernel update? I'm assuming a full regression test isn't necessary - could you provide some guidance as to what level of testing you have performed in the past?

Thanks for the help!

Abby

If you have send box, first apply kernel patch there only, After that you may proceed to DEV-QAS-PRD.

Do let us know incase of any issue.

Dear Abby,

Its always recommended to upgrade kernel first on your DEV Box and only after smooth startup and operation then only you should do the update on QAS and PRD boxes. However, for more insights on kernel upgrade kindly refer the SAP Note 19466.

Hi,

I agree with Abhishek. Test it first in DEV to know if you have some problem in the installation process or to check if SAP starts OK after the patch. There's no much to test, the kernel is the layer between OS and SAP and this don't change the ABAP codes. SAP is built on a layer design. The main Idea is that you work on a higher layer and you don't care about the lower layers because you have to suppose that they work as expected. SAP is responsible for testing the kernel. If they say that you can install the kernel version they should have already tested it.

Cheers,

Diego.
