What will be the future of MDM 3.0 ?

Last month SAP acquired a company called A2I. SAP will use this software, renamed to MDME integrated into MDM 4.00; however the question is, how to deal with current MDM 3.00 implementation projects.

Hi Maurice,

A21 was taken over last year already - watch this link (german):

http://www.n24.de/wirtschaft/unternehmen/index.php/a2004071310090231441

Actually it seems, that SAP puts more and more stress on this MDME-tool, which to me makes sense as it is a handy small tool, with great functionalities. And it does not require at least 3 hosts, EP, XI... very handy indeed.

Regards, Matthias

Hi Everyone,

SAP indeed acquired A2i last year in July, 2004. The solutions known as xCat were rebranded as SAP MDME (Master Data Management Extension). SAP has already shipped SAP MDME Feature Pack, a release that is integrated with the SAP NetWeaver platform as well as significantly enhanced and broadened in scope with new features. It provides significant capabilities for rich content management, ability to manage complex data with support for taxonomies, hierarchies etc, data models that support customer, product, employer and supplier, interactive distribution via the SAP Exchange Infrastructure etc.

With an intent to maximize overall value to the customer, this release, namely, SAP MDME Feature Pack, has become the basis for all new MDM development moving forward and there is now an accelerated development timeframe to incorporate other features into this release. We will post more details very shortly on this.

SAP MDM 3.0 will only be available via restricted shipment for very specific cases, when customer needs cannot be accommodated immediately. However, this release will not be generally available since all development will be done on the core SAP MDME Feature Pack release moving forward.

SAP MDM 3.0 customers will be fully supported until 2009 using SAP's 5-1-2 support strategy. SAP will stand behind all its customers and provide migration support based on a case by case analysis.

We believe this approach will deliver maximum value to our customers as well as deliver on the vision of MDM.

best regards

Sunil

Does your note mean that with MDME you do not need Portals, Exchange Infrastructure, and Business Warehouse? If so, it sounds like SAP has abandoned their architecture.

Hi Michael,

Please read the weblog I posted on similar topic. https://weblogs.sdn.sap.com/cs/weblog/view/wlg/1729.

It is the choice that smart architect will take based on business objectives and criterias defined for IT. But, to give you exact answer, SAP is not abondoning its architecture but strengthening it by making right decisions for our customers.

Within SAP NetWeaver MDM 5.5, XI (distribution), BI (analytics), and EP (end-user point of entry) are still involved.

Hi,

we are completely new to MDM.We are assessing the possibility to install MDM 5.5.We have a bit of confusion because we notice that MDM 3.00 was installed as a Netweaver Add-on while MDM 5.5 (as it is shown in the installatin Guide) is installed directly on file system and uses a DB as repository. We only want to know if what we found is correct.

Could you please help us on this matter?

If this is not right could you please supply with a document for the complete installation of MDM 5.5?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

while MDM 5.5 (as it is shown in the installatin Guide) is installed directly on file system and uses a DB as repository.

Yes, you did install the right thing. Go thru the config guide and configure the DB with MDM server.

Thanks and regards

I got an opportunity to talk on this during MDM 3.0 Ramp-up training took place at Walldorf in the month of March 2005. Information is - there is likely to be major change but official announcement is to be made.

I was at Developer Info Day after the ASUG annual conference in Anaheim beginning of May. They showed us some stuff that is to be released for MDM in Netweaver 2004/5S this fall and it looked very good. I last looked at MDM at a SAP demo and with no hands on and it is looking pretty decent

To get an overview of the up-to-date SAP MDM 5.5, please look at the MDM homepage in SDN (http://www.sdn.sap.com/sdn/developerareas/mdm.sdn?node=linkDnode8).

More information can be found in the Service Marketplace (quick link: /mdm).

Kind regards,

Hello Mr. Nilesh,

Thanks for the interest in this subject.

MDME (or MDM 5.5) is the latest version.

In very brief, MDM is managing the Master data (say Material master, Business partners - Vendors or customers). Managing; means, consolidating, harmonising or central maintenance.

Other area in MDM 5.5 is Global data synchronisation.

There is lot of information available about this on SDN. However, I will send you the information on the mail id you gave me.
