Crystal Reports 2008 hanging on startup

We were working in CR2k8 OK and then closed the app with a report open (which have done hundreds of times in the past without any issues). We then tried to open CR2k8 and the app is hanging after the splash window. We have tried restarting, repairing, removing/installing and they all result in the same hanging operation. We are able to open CR2k8 by first opening a report, but the "start page" cannot be displayed. We would greatly appreciate any advise on resolving this issue.
