Help for SAP EP solution

I am looking for help on SAP EP distributed Installation based on NW 7.3 and DB2. Can someone please help me with the following queries ?

1. Is it reasonable to have ABAP + Java stack for EP ? What benefit does ABAP stack help with when added to the server ?

2. Is the ABAP stack required for UME such that all ABAP users automatically have access to EP /irj/portal account.

3. In case you don't have ABAP stack, how can we define UME or assign authorizations to users for portal account ?

3. Are distributed installations and High Availability (HA) solutions same ? I mean is every distributed installation also a HA solution (of any NW product) and how about vice - versa.

4. Should the following components be sufficient:

51039309_1 NW 7.3 ABAP Installation Export 1/2

51039309_2 NW 7.3 ABAP Installation Export 2/2

51039309_8 NW 7.3 Java 1/6

51039309_11 NW 7.3 Java 4/6

51039309_12 NW 7.3 Java 5/6

51039309_13 NW 7.3 Java 6/6

51041560_18 NW 7.3 Kernel, Inst.Master, Upgr.Master AIX 64bit 1 / 3

51041560_19 NW 7.3 Kernel, Inst.Master, Upgr.Master AIX 64bit 2 / 3

51041560_20 NW 7.3 Kernel, Inst.Master, Upgr.Master AIX 64bit 3 / 3

51041560_50 NW 7.3 Kernel, Inst.Master, Upgr.Master OS/390

5. What are the following used for ?

NW 7.0 Presentation - 7.20 Compilation 3 Present. 1/2

NW 7.0 Presentation - 7.20 Compilation 3 Present. 2/2

NW 7.0 Presentation - Server Components Compilation 3

Sorry if they sound very simple... Appreciate every help..

Hi,

1. Is it reasonable to have ABAP + Java stack for EP ? What benefit does ABAP stack help with when added to the server ?

Enterprise Portal is best used standalone especially for Production systems. The is usually because the central portal is usually connected to various backend systems like SAP ECC, SAP SRM etc. Hence a dual stack installation is not required, because ultimately a Portal will be connected to multiple backend systems. In addtion, single stack installation can avoid many performance issues.

2. Is the ABAP stack required for UME such that all ABAP users automatically have access to EP /irj/portal account.

Again no, the SSO is usually setup between various ABAP backends and the Enterprise Portal system. With SSO, you just need same name user ID existing on the Portal and backend systems. Role assignments on the Portal and corresponding backend systems gives the required access. And Portal is meant for end users, you would not want all ABAP users having access to the portal.

3. In case you don't have ABAP stack, how can we define UME or assign authorizations to users for portal account ?

As mentioned above, Java can use its own database UME. SSO can be established with ABAP backends. One more option is to have a central LDAP which acts are user source for your entire landscape. But LDAP will need further configurations.

3. Are distributed installations and High Availability (HA) solutions same ? I mean is every distributed installation also a HA solution (of any NW product) and how about vice - versa.

These are two different things. Distributed installation only implies that the database and application server instances are on seperate hosts. Wherea HA is for disaster recovery wherein standby nodes pick up incase the original system goes down for some issue. HA will include distributed installation as a small part, but not the other way round.

Regarding components for installation, the DVDs you mentioned should be enough for your installation. I would recommend to check the installation guide for NW 7.3 at http://service.sap.com/instguides where DVDs required for respective usage types are mentioned.

Hope it helps.

Srikishan

Thank you. One last thing about EP is the usage type EP Core v/s EP. I have been through the guides that say EP Core is required where only core capabilities of portal are required. However, I am finding it difficult to understand what are these core capabilities. In other words, what capabilities / modules will I miss having selected EP core instead of EP ?

Any clue ?

Hi,

SAP EP does not have any abap stack. Its purely JAVA stack system.

DVDs mentioned are fine.
