ACT_UPG phase running without updating logs in EHP5 upgrade

Hello Gurus,

i am in the process of EHP5 upgradation from ECC 6.0, now in the phase of MAIN_SHDRMAIN_SHDRUN/ACT_UPG it is running from last 2 days and not updating any logs under log or tmp. i have implimented 1387739 note also but stll it is running without any log update.

when i check in shadow instace one job RDDMASGL is running from 78000 sec and no dumps in st22.

latest log file in tmp as follow:(last lines)

Then check does this entry exist?

Also try to check in SE11 with RSMPTEXTS and then check the status?

Hi All,

Thanks for your help and valuable time.

Problem was solved by applying Note 1331202.

now it is still running in the same phase from last 16 hours( i was selected default resources in the configuration phase), could you please tell me how much time will it take.

Hi Venkatraj,

There seems to be a duplicate entry in the table and better try with different suport pack.Let me know the hardware configuration and network speed why this takes longer time And Kindly refer sap note 1074030,1127194 and 1596921 immediately that will help u

which option you select for the memory-optimizer activator? Please check KBA #[1630256|https://bosap-support.wdf.sap.corp/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/sno/ui_entry/entry.htm?param=69765F6D6F64653D3030312669765F7361706E6F7465735F6E756D6265723D3030303136333032353626], if you select YES and your system is 64bits, ACT_UPG will take forever to complete. Follow the instructions of the article to remove the parameter "ddic/masact/memopt = true" from the shadow instance profile, restart shadow and repeat phase.

Hi Tomas,

I have selected Yes becoz it is 32 bit OS.

still now it is in phase ACT_UPG. but in updated file it is showing as phase "004" is runing with level "480".

Could you please let me know how many phases will be there and how many levels will be there under one phase?

Is it possiblity to increase parallel process and batch process for next steps?

At last i have completed above ACT_UPG phase successfully and now i got struck with new error

if we want apply in shadow instance then how can i apply this Since shadow system is down.

Hi,

You need to make your shadown instance up and then apply the note in shadow instance only.

when try to start sap it is not starting up so i tried this below option as per one of SDN post.

tried to unlock shadow system with SAPehpi unlockshd <SID> but got below error

4 ETQ382 translates to group "R3UP_TOOL_GROUP_NEW"

FATAL ERROR: Calling 'tp.exe' failed with return code 232

Hi Venkat,

What was the error you got when starting shadow instance? Shadow instance must be unlocked when its up and running.

You have to use the following commands to start and unlock shadow instance.

./SAPup startshd

cd to upgrade directory .../bin

./SAPup unlockshd <SAPSID>

what am doing is tried to start shadow instance by MMC but after starting Massage Server and disp+work it stoping itself.

so tried to unlock it at os level bu above your commands but it has given tp error as above.

SO not undestarding what should i do ?

Hi Venkat,

You can't unlock shadow instance when it's not running. Please try to start using above given command and analyze the error.

At this time the start of the shadow instance is not possible,

since you have passed phase STOP_SHDI_LAST!!!

wp_w0 log: it was connected to data base with SAPSR3SHD after that am able to see below error any idea on this.

DB instance IJE is running on ADMIN0001 with ORACLE version 10.2.0.2.0 since NOV 19, 2011, 19:08:00.

B Connection 0 opened (DBSL handle 0)

C OCIStmtExecute() failed with -1=OCI_ERROR

C SQL error 942:

Hi Venkat,

As per logs, since you have passed phase STOP_SHDI_LAST, we can't start shadow instance.

This table should be there in DB. Can you please login with orasid and check if it exists in DB?

As per the below link, this error could happen when environment variables point to wrong path. Please take a look at this thread.

So i followed below steps:

1) applied latest R3trans and tp in exe and exenew then started but same as above error

2) as Per note 542302 - Cleaning up table RSMPTEXTS performed in original instance but no luck

here i have doubt this need to be applied in shadow system or original system?

then i thought to apply in shadow system but am not able to start shadow system becoz of error in previous post.

Please help me to solve my problem.

Did you get chance to look at actual status of the job from SM37 (Job-->Check status)? Please check ST22 or SM21 for any clue.

Since you have choosen default values of Batch process, maximum uptime process and R3trans process, long ACT_UPG phase runtime is expected.

SAPehpi* logs are getting updated at OS level?

Yes i have checked at Os level only one file SAPAB70016.<sid> is updating now in tmp directory and if i opened and check now it is running in phase 004.

So how much time can i expect it to complete? how many phases will be there?

in workprocess one BTC is updating freuently with insert/ update action.

Please give your suggesions.

Hi,

There is no formula to calculate that. Runtime of ACT_UPG depends on no.of batch processes chosen and batch processes as we discussed in above replies.
