Material - Range of numbers

Hi experts,

We have 3 companies in the group, and each one manage their own material numbers ('smart codes') when the first and second character mean something, the third and fourth character mean other concept, etc.

With SAP the range of number is internal (correlative). What are the reasons (technical and functional) so that the materials number were correlatives?

Thanks in advance for your help.

José Luis

If you want implement your "smart codes" only for display you have to use the enhancement MGA00003, in this case SAP will store the numbers in internal number range but it when displaying it will concatenate your "smart code" according to the logic you maintained in the exit.

But if you want it to create and store numbers according to your smart code logic automatically you have to use this exit MGA00002.

Absolutely, I second what Jürgen saying here!

Also, the concept of master data is its uniformity across client and Organization levels. Unless there are business reason that cannot be altered. Longer term advantages of keeping uniformity and un-redundant master data far out weighs any other reason.

    Dear José Luis,

For Material Master data SAP gives you option of providing External Number/Name to your Material that can be Alpha-Numeric.

So you can create the Material Differently.

About concept of Master Data. Please go through the link below to get hang of it.

it is your choice if you use internal or external numbers in SAP.

There is no problem to continue with your approach of material numbers.

I personally do not like external numbers, as any logic has a limit of possible entries, and I just saw it too often that new logics had to be developed to be able to create new materials. so the best logic is broken and is useless and meaningless like anonymous numbers. So why not using internal numbers right away?
