WebI based on MaxDB ODBC connection

Hi,

I have created a MaxDB ODBC connection with the Universe Design Tool (BO 4.0 SP2 Patch 7). The universe is working fine - connection and integrety test are successful. I exported the universe to the BI-Platform.

With WebI Rich Client I can create a report based on this universe. With WebI (BI Launch Pad) I want to do the same. I can build my query but when I click on "execute query" nothing happens. It seemed WebI load and load and load...The browser doesn't hang!

My ODBC connection (32bit ODBC Manager) works fine with MaxDB 7.8 driver (on server Win64-OS).

Can somebody explain why Rich Client works fine and the webbased WebI not? Does the Rich Client work 32bit and the webbased WebI 64bit?

Regards,

Peter

You have to download from https://service.sap.com/swdc the MaxDB 7.7 64-Bit (Win x64) installer. This installer contains the 32bit and 64bit odbc driver.

Hi Peter,

Thanks. I managed to install the 32-bit driver successfuly. I am able to create a DSN and connect to the database using the odbc Datasource Administrator. The strange thing is i am not able to connect using that same DSN from the information design tool.

I get an authentication error:

[SAP AG][SDBODBC DLL][MaxDB] General error;-4008 POS(1) Unknown user name/password combination

I am using the same credentials.

Hi Lars,

try out to write your password in uppercase characters. In Universe Design Tool this helps.

Hi Peter,

Do you know how to grant full control on the SAP schema to a user?

I can see all the dba tables but no SAP tables from IDT.

Thanks,

Lars

Hi,

What tables are you trying to see ? like Cube FACT tables and/or InfoObject tables? (You need the Data Federator BW-SQL MultiSource Universe for that)

Else, you might need the DbOwner or sysdb / SQL user of that MAxDB instance.

Hi Henry,

Indeed. I connected using a dba user. When i connect with the schema owner the SAP tales are visible.

I would like to connect to the SAP schema with a user other than the schema-owner.

Thanks,

Hi Peter,

You may want to first try using a 64 bit ODBC DSN on the server - maybe that will work? If not, the PAR says 7.7 is supported so you may want to try that instead of 7.8.

As far as why it works on your client - you may be running webi rich client in 2-tier mode which would use the connectivity on your client machine instead of the server.

Also, FYI - the only part of BI4 that is 64 bit is the server. The client tools are still 32 bit.

Thanks,

John

Hi John,

32 and 64bit MaxDB 7.8 ODBC driver is installed on the server. Their connect to the MaxDB is successful. In Universe Design Tool all connection types (Generic ODBC, Generic ODBC3, MaxDB 7.7 ODBC) are successful, too. Rich Client works fine. Why does WebI via BI Launch not work fine, too? BO Client Tools are installed on the server so WebI Rich Client works on the server and with the server's ODBC connections!

We want to try it with MaxDB 7.7 ODBC driver. Other ideas or suggestions?

Peter

Webi via BIlaunchpad requires 64bit DB drivers, have you configured 64 and 32 bit ODBC DSN with exact same name (we know 32bit ones are working)...

Hi Dennis,

yes we have configured both ODBC connections with the same name! Other ideas? Do the connection server and the connection server 32 in the CMC influence the odbc universe connections?

I think it'll be better/faster/more efficiently if you open a support ticket on this. We're probably missing some minor detail and support will be able to provide solution quickly.

does it happen only with maxdb based Universes? have you tried for example with the sample universes like e-fashion that comes by default with Business Objects?

Hi Peter,

How did you manage to install 32 and 64bit MaxDB 7.8 ODBC driver is installed on the 64-bit server.

I was only able to install the 64-bit version.

Thanks.

Hi Lars,

you have to download from https://service.sap.com/swdc the MaxDB 7.7 64-Bit (Win x64) installer. This installer contains the 32bit odbc driver, too!!! You can recognize this during the setup process.

The 7.7 version should be works with MaxDB 7.8 database...Maybe the 7.8 driver contains 32 and 64 bit driver, too.

Good luck!

Best Regards,

Peter
