Working of Alias

Hi All,

i am working on BOXI R2, i have already existed universe with one fact table and many dimensions. there is no loops its working properly. i got new requirement on same universe, added the new table then i got loop. i resolved it by alias.

Assume tables like Fact F, Dimensions D1 and D2

joins F-- -D1 and F --

New Requirement

new table D3

joins D1--

D3 and D2--

Loop is D3---- D1

F-- -D2 -- -D3, i made D3 as alias. i resolved the loop like D3Alias

My question is, if i select the fields from D3 what r the joins are picked.

If I am not clear, i will explain with better example.

    Upto my understanding,

You can provide short cut join to D3 from D1 and D2 seperately.

Regular join from F to D1 and D2 sepeartely.

If u choose D3 with combination of F and D1 it will consider F to D1 to D3 and also vice versa.

For applying short cut join right click on join between D1 and D3 and choose short cut join option.

      Hi Me map,

      But what u told is

"Shortcut joins are used to shorten join paths where possible, not to resolve loops.

      They are performance enhancements."

For that only I posted the shortcut join definition.

Anyhow now I am very much clear about the shortcut joins and in which circumstances it can be used after this discuission in this thread.

      Thanks and Regards,

The question you need to ask is:

What is selected when you go from F to D1 to D3?

What is the functional meaning of what you pick up out of D3 then.

Is it the same or something else if you go from F to D2 to D3?

Lets assume D1 and D2 are Customer and Company.

    D3 is an address table.

Then D1 to D3 will give you a Customer Address,

D2 to D3 will give you a Company Address.

In this case the alias is fine and you create objects from the D3 joined to D1 and put them in a class Customer Address.

Similar you create a class Company Address for the objects coming from the D3 joined to D2.

So the user will be able to pick the information they are interested in and the join is chosen accordingly.

    If it would be same information independent of F - D1 - D3 or F - D2 - D3 then a shortcut join is an option.

Lets say D1-D3 is a normal join and D2-D3 is the shortcut.

Then you will have just one set of objects and if the user selects objects from D1 and D3 the normal join will be used, but if they only select objects from D2 and D3, the shortcut join will be used.

    Hope this is clear enough,
