Resize the Datafiles from a MaxDB

Hello,

after my SAP EHP5 update is the database has grown to 150 GB. But 120 GB are now free. Is it possible to remove or shrink some datafiles from the Database? (like a resize at Oracle).

I know the only way to delete the database, create it again and restore the data.

Did anyone knows an easier way?

You can delete the data volume, but cannot resize or shrink

Nearly correct

You can enlarge data volume files, but not shrink them.

To get rid of the large files, just create some new smaller files and drop the old files.

As this can take quite some time another (quicker) approach is to take a full backup and recreate the database instance with a smaller set of files. This can of course only be done if you can afford the downtime. The first option can be done while the system is up and running.

As a hint you should keep in mind, that MaxDB parallelises over the data volumes.

So make sure not to reduce the number of them too much.

Sure? There shouldn't be a misunderstanding here... A new data volume can be added but how can you resize an existing data volume, on MaxDB? I double checked it on database manager and couldn't find a way to enlarge the data file.

Hi,

thanks a lot. I tryto deletethe datafiles on my test system and it works. I didn't know that the MaxDB could do this without restore. And I could do it online.

It is a great database.
