I see references to R4...and R5.
Which is it? R4 or R5?

There is NO R/4 nor R/5. At least not as a product from SAP.

I Hope You misunderstood SAP R/3, R/3 reffers for Three tier Architecture (Front end,Middleware and Backend)See the link below for more deatils..

when it comes to SAP R/3 4.6b or SAP R/3 4.6 these are versions like any other softwares.
