Crystal Reports 2011 Demo Install Error

Former Member

Downloaded the trial of Crystal Reports 2011 today (installer says it is SP2) and it will not install. Searched the forums and the 'net and not finding anything that appears to be applicable to my situation, so here goes:

Windows 7 64-bit Pro SP 1, all updates

Crystal Reports 8.5 and 9.2 installed

Visual Studio 2010 Pro with all updates

RAD Studio XE2 with latest updates

Crystal Reports for Visual Studio 2010

I run the setup as an admin, Windows 7 compatibility checked, etc. as suggested in other posts.

I am getting a Visual C++ runtime library error "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way."

I get this initially when the installer says "Installing Deployment Unit:" and the unit listed is:

tp.microsoft.vcredist-7.1-core-32,14.0.0.760

I have a screenshot, but the above gives relevant information. If I click OK on the error, I will continuously get it for all other files and then get the pleasure of getting it again when I cancel the installation. We have been considering moving to SSRS, but wanted to give the 2011 Crystal a shot since we have several hundred reports developed in it.

Thanks in advance for any help and apologies if I missed something in my searching. Any ideas??

I wasted a half hour of life clicking through the error messages so I could get a installation log file. I do have it if you are interested in me forwarding it to you. Also, from my Event Log:

Faulting application name: actionagentproc.exe, version: 14.0.2.364, time stamp: 0x4de9a44b

Faulting module name: MSVCR80.dll, version: 8.0.50727.6195, time stamp: 0x4dcddbf3

Exception code: 0x40000015

Fault offset: 0x000046b4

Faulting process id: 0x994

Faulting application start time: 0x01cc7ec5e9219911

Faulting application path: C:\Crystal Reports 2011\DATA_UNITS\CrystalReports\setup.engine\actionagentproc.exe

Faulting module path: C:\Windows\WinSxS\x86_microsoft.vc80.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.6195_none_d09154e044272b9a\MSVCR80.dll

Report Id: 273db671-eab9-11e0-a20e-0026b98400e5

I get these for EVERY item you are installing/action performed (so you can see how many of those messages I had to click through!)

Just for reference, I also ran a Windows Instrumentation check (wmic qfe list) to see what hotfixes are installed and none of the hotfixes mentioned are installed on this system. At this point I am at a complete loss and can't think of anything else to try.

Matt,

You do not have to pay for this installation issue.

I will contact you via e-mail for troubleshooting and will update current forum post with a progress.

We finally figured out the problem thanks to Vitaly's help and interpreting the log files. The problem is that the installation utilizes port 4520 to communicate among processes (apparently), so something in my firewall configuration was blocking the communication. I disabled my McAfee Firewall (we have the corporate edition, but I am sure the personal works the same way) and the program installed successfully and without error! I am quite happy to have this installed and working.

For other's reference, I did check the firewall blacklist and nothing related to SAP or Crystal Reports was listed so I had to have something configured that was blocking this port. Turning off the firewall to install a program is not something I would do lightly; however, we do have a corporate firewall at our demarcation point, so I wasn't too worried about it considering. Once the program installed, I simply turned back on the desktop firewall and everything is working wonderfully.

Cheers!

Hi Matt,

Thank you for updating the post with the solution.

This is by design, typically internal ports are not blocked and CR uses this port to communicate within our install process to handle the various processes....

If anyone gets this error then please see this kbase article: 1638102 - Crystal Reports 2011 Installation best practices

Thanks again

Don

Still hacking away...I went in and disabled everything (virus protection, Dropbox, you name it), stopped any unnecessary services, and had nothing else running and I still get the exact same error in the exact same place.

In searching for solutions, almost every one I found points to programmer error of some sort and the message has nothing to do with the Visual C++ library at all. I have no problem taking the time to do a GoToAssist (or whatever support tool SAP uses) to help you track down what is causing this not only to help myself but to better the product for others in the community, but I am certainly NOT going to pay for the privilege of helping SAP fix their error. I am a bit perturbed at this point--I did call in and was told I had to pay to talk to someone to help me get my purchased product installed!

I do appreciate the assistance, but at this point I have paid for a bunch of useless bits that I can't even install. Please help!

Well, that didn't go so well, exact same error in the exact same spot. I figured as much when I saw the file name was the same with the exception of the added _CR to it. So I now have the same issue with a purchased version of the software. I would call for support, but I understand (and PLEASE tell me if I am misinformed) that I have to PAY to speak to someone just to get the software I purchased installed?!!! I completely understand paying for ongoing support, but have never had to pay just to get software installed--I do hope I am being misled or misunderstanding something as that would be absolutely horrible customer service.

At any rate, I am now officially stuck--I have all the prereqs from what I can tell and if I were to continue all the way through with the install I will be clicking OK on that error message probably hundreds of times based on the number of files it appears the installer was caching.

Thanks in advance for your assistance and help!

The file I downloaded from the SAP website is named 51041020.ZIP and is 663MB in size. It was downloaded from the trial page that is linked to from the Crystal Reports 2011 info pages on the site. I don't have those KB items installed on my system.

I didn't have time to try to install it in my Windows 7 VM on the Mac last night but will try to do so this afternoon. I have all the prerequisites with no problem (plus, wouldn't the installer catch it if I didn't--it appears to have a prerequisite test as it informs me I have Admin access), so I am not sure where to go from at this point.

It appears that SAP offers a 30-day refund, so I may just buy the full version and go from that point--still, it is very frustrating that the trial won't install given how many other developer tools I have successfully installed on my system without error. Hopefully this is just a problem with the trial download that was linked to on the site. I will keep this post updated with my status once I am able to download the full version.

Cheers--Matt

Thanks for the reply. I downloaded it directly from the SAP website--had to register and key the confirmation email with the product key to boot. I am going to try to install on my Win 7 virtual machine on my Mac and see if I get the same thing, but if SAP posted an incremental build in error, it will cause the same issue I suppose.

Hello,

First thing is CR 8.5 is not side by side compatible, so uninstall it. I don't see this causing install issues but just an FYI...

I assume you downloaded it from the Trial version Page then or was it in Service Market Place?

SP 2 is both Full and Incremental so I'll start the download and test also. It may be they linked to the wrong file.

How big was the file you downloaded?

Also, have a look at this post: , there may be something going on with one of those MS Kbases causing the issue, or could be something new.

I checked with the PM for Cr 2011 and there should be both incremental and a full build available, possibly they did link it to the wrong one...

Thanks again

Don

Oh and check that you have .NET 2.0 to 4.0 Framework installed, CR requires is.

Hello,

It sounds like you have the incremental build. Where did you download it from? You may have to start with SP1 or even the original.

Thank you
