Hi, I have been assigned the task of improving the way our company works with SAP. I don't want to play with the live version of our company, is there any problem in creating a new company so that I can look into user defined fields, tables, addons, reports etc.. without affecting the live database? For example, if a post a purchase order on a test company, will this appear on the live database?
Regards,
Thomas.
Ho Thomas,
once you have restored the copy of the live db under an appropriate name, please make sure that access is restricted to you. Otherwise a user may accidentally log into the test backup, enter data & all the work will have to be replicated into the live db.
All the best,
Kerstin

Thank you all for the replies, I created two test companies, one that is a copy of the live database using backup/restore and the other is a clean company with no data both for different purposes. Thanks for the tips.
Regards,
Thomas

Whoops, the company created from a backup of the live database is fine, however the clean company obviously has no users set up yet. Is there a certain user I nee to login as to create user codes?
In the company db, OUSR table shows two users, B1i and manager but both have passwords.
Regards,
Thomas.

Hi,
In new company, you need to set up not only users but all other settings, accounts, items, numbering as well.
To perform these tasks you need to login with such user ID which has full authorization/superuser.
Try to perform the tasks using the Manager user id and password.

Hi,
Of course you can create a new company as a test and like other mentioned you can take a backup of the live database and restore the same as a SANDBOX. By doing this you will have much needed transactions and data using which you can test out various settings, UDF's, Formatted Searches etc.
Just to be sure that you by mistake do not log into the Live Database and start performing the tests, you can goto the
Administration > System Initialization > Company Details > General Tab and change the Company name from whatever the live database is called to a "TEST COPY DO NOT WORK" or may be "SANDBOX".
When you re-login, you will see that the name of the database is changed in the Choose Company window as well.
Make sure that the users are made aware that the backup restored is a test and they do not start working on it, otherwise work will be lost and no entry or testing made in SANDBOX will affect the Live database.

hi,
when doing things for the purpose of testing, its is always a good practice to do it in test company or test database. your live database will not be affected when making transaction in the test company. just a tip, you have to make sure that you are logged to the test database before making any postings in the system... to check go to Administration -- choose campany, this window will display the comapany details....
best regards,
Fidel

Hi Thomas......
This is very simple. If you have complete configuration in Live Database and you need all the customization and its Addon to be working in the new company just for testing purpose then no need to create new company. Just Take back up of Live database and restore it with the name Test as other company and do testing with the addons.
This way you get complete configuration with customization and it saves your time of creating and configuring new company........

HI
It wont affect your live company until or unless you are working on live database....
You can take the backup of live database and restore it in new database as 'test'...
then practise on test...
