SAP High Availability with AIX PowerHA and Oracle or Oracle RAC

Does anyone have experience with AIX PowerHA and Oracle? There is a lot of confusion in the installation guide and blogs on the use of Oracle Enterprise Edition or Oracle RAC. Do we need to install Oracle RAC with PowerHA? Or can we use the Oracle as is and use PowerHA as the clusterware?

Hello Thomas,

i have planned and configured various installations with AIX PowerHA and Oracle (single instance) and SAP.

You don't need Oracle RAC for Power HA. Power HA itself is the "clusterware" and you can start / stop the Oracle database with start and stop scripts that you define in the Power HA application part.

IBM published a redbook - it is very old and Power HA is called HACMP, but the concept did not change:

Thank you for the response back. The documentation is very confusing and even in the forum it is not clear as to what products to use. The links that you provided I have seen.
