Hi Gurus

i implemented SAP HANA Express on my laptop last week and it worked fine for the first few days.

However today I ran the /sbin/ifconfig command and found that the IP Address has changed, and not just sort of kinda changed by complete and utterly changed.

Any ideas what is causing this and how I can prevent this in the future.

Thanks

Arden

I think you are using DHCP which is the default setting. So the IP can change.

You can follow the steps of the SAP HANA Academy Video SAP HANA Express: Setup - Static IP for VM to set a static IP.

That's correct. Default setting used by VMware (and configured by SAP for the HXE VM) is Bridged Networking, which uses the built-in VM 'virtual' DHCP service with the NIC on the guest OS configured to use DCHP as well.

The way DHCP works is that it will attempt to reuse the IP (update the lease) as long as you are working on the same network. If you change the network, for example from the office to your home office, a different IP will be assigned.

You can set a fixed IP, if your location does not change. However, if you do change locations, this may not work the way you intend because with the fixed IP you will have a fixed default gateway as well. For example, my home office IP starts with 192.x.x.x. whereas in the office, I will be working in the 10.x.x.x range. Setting a fixed IP in this scenario would not be a good idea.

If you only need traffic between your host and the guest, configuring the VM to use the host-only networking setting works better. This will use the same range every time and re-use the DHCP-provided IP every time (unless it finds it already taken).

Thanks Gents

I'm working from home but bouncing between home WIFI and my work Modem while I set-up SAP Demos, so no wonder the IP is switching.

I'll play around with the options you've suggested.

Thanks again
