Has anyone implemented Multiple instances of SAP R/3 on the same Production server ?

If "yes", our team would like understand implementation scenarios and related issues.

Thanks in advance,

Anil.

We have, on more than one occasion.

The biggest concern other than the strength of your hardware is to be sure that you don't use the same instance number.

The hardware is the biggest concern as you require power for your users and with two systems running on one server you have the problem that you may not have a strong enough system in terms of memory and hard drive space and netwrok.

Hi Craig,

Thanks for your response.

Assuming resources is not a constraint, are there any recommendations on the max number of instances ?

Couple of folks from our technical team are also watching this posting. So you may have more questions, coming your way..

Thanks,

Anil.

Provided no resources constraints is a rather tall order. I would stay away from more than 2 and typically we've gone to 1 central instance and perhaps a second application instance from another server with it.

The systems tend to suck alot of juice and therefore it's hard to measure the resources they will take.

My team has been investigating the same issue on a test server.

We use the term "system" to denote an SAP system represented by a SID, and the term "instance" to mean an instance (be it central or dialog) within a system.

Below is what we have done:

1. Installed the first system with a central instance 00

2. Installed a second system with a central instance 44 and a dialog instance 45

3. Installed the third system with a central instance also using the instance number 00.

The last installation caused some confusion in both SAPMMC and the registry, which verified Graig's recommendation of not using the same instance number.

That's not a recommendation from me that is a proven fact and statement from SAP you can not have two systems (dialog or central) on the same server with the same instance number.

You'll also run into some issues with two central instances on 1 server (database wise)
