Substituable Materials in Production Orders

Hello SAP Experts,

I have a client that needs to change materials in a production order (copied from the BOM) because materials can vary within each order, however versions and material configuration is not applicable in this case. What they want is to be able to include, exclude or change a material in the production order which I know is duable in standard SAP, however when they change a material for another they want to able to select within a range of possible materials, in other words they want to restrict the materials for which a specific material can be changed in a production order.

you can use alternative items task in production order. with which you can use substitute materials only

One option would be to group like minded materials in a given class. Search for eligible replacement material would need to be done outside the production order in another session. Granted that it would be a manual action.

I wonder how you manage mrp / materials availability etc in the situation that you described.

They are not using MRP.

This can be possible by using alternative item in BOM.

Current BOM in your system.

Material Quantity

A 01

B 01

C 02

You require that when production order created, another material or a material from certain group of materials can be used in production order for material A

New BOM

Material Quantity

A 01 AltItemGroup 01 Priority 1 Strategy 2 100% check Usage prob. 100

D 01 AltItemGroup 01 Priority 2 Strategy 2 100% check Usage prob. 0

B 01

C 02

When production order created, you can change usage probability in component overview and system will automatically change production order reservation as per probability usage

Certainly alternative item is a useful functionality for this situation, of which I had no knowledge about. Still one thing doesn't seem to be as easy for the customer. It happens to be that they will have lots of alternatives within an alternative item group and as well different alternative groups in a bill of material. The decision making of choosing one or the other will depend basically on the customer's needs so this will use a manual strategy, however when the production order is created and we decide to change Percentage usage probability we have all the materials mixed with different alternative group, any way to classify this in the material view?

Hi,

If I my understanding is correct then do it in this way.

Create material group, assign the similar materials to the material group in material master Basic data1 view. In the production order CO02, if you want to change materials then in the components overview press F4. System will display the options select materials by material group and enter the material group. Then system will show the materials related to that material group.

Check it and revert back.
