Compatibility of newer Troy MICR printers with TROYMICR device type

We are considering replacing our 11-year-old check printer (a Troy 8100) with a newer model, but before committing that kind of money (these are not cheap printers) I'd like to confirm compatibility. Our old 8100 was using a ZHP5MI device type modified by a consultant to work. Now I see that SAP offers a TROYMICR device type, but [Note 94233|http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/94233] states that newer Troy models are incompatible with this device type. It also only lists discontinued printer models as being compatible. AND, it also states at the top that the Note is no longer updated (it's been over 2 years).

Troy tells us that the new models will work fine with the TROYMICR device type and that the Note is out-of-date, which seems reasonable. Specifically, the models we're looking at are the 4014/4015/4515 series, which are apparently based on the HP LaserJet P4010/P4510 series.

Has anyone used one of these printers, either the Troy or the HP models, successfully with SAP?

Thanks,

Matt

Hi Matt,

Did you ever get the Troy P4014 printer?  We have that printer and are trying to print checks and cannot do so.  I downloaded the ZTROYMCR device from OSS note 1365714 but it still doesn't work.  The printer seems to go into a loop and we have to restart it.  We currently use this printer to print our AP checks and just thought we could convert to SAP since we are replacing our current AP system with SAP.

Thanks,

Peggy

Hi Peggy,

As a matter of fact we did.  We purchased the 4014 in the end, and it's working just fine.  We're actually using a modification of an old MICR device type for it, but in comparison there really isn't any difference between what we're using and the TROYMICR device type that is standard in the system in terms of formats or print controls.  Also, there should be no need for you to download the Z device type in Note 1365714, as the problem they describe was fixed a long time ago with a kernel patch (patch 9 for the 7.20 kernel).  You should be able to use TROYMICR as you see it in the system.

I recommend that you start a new thread in this space for your question, so that other people will see that it's a new question, and hopefully be able to help out.  You also could open an Incident message with SAP support, and/or contact Troy customer support for help.  I take it this is an existing printer working fine in your legacy AP system, right?  The problem could also be something in the form you use for your checks.  If you can rule out the printer hardware and the device type, you might open a question in the sapscript forum.

Best regards,

Matt

Hi Matt,

I don't have one of these TROY printers. My only suggestion is as follows.

Create a spool using the standard text SAPSCRIPT-MICRTEST and device type TROYMICR. Capture the created print file. See SAP note #5799, method 3. You could give this created print file to TROY and ask them if it prints successfully on the newer TROY printer models. This would prove that the device type TROYMICR can work with these newer TROY printer models.
