SmartSync database replication query

In case of SmartSynchronization, how does the replication of data takes place between the backend and the replica database available at middle tier.

1. Is it that on each request the client sends, the data of replica db(middle tier) and backend is synchronized or

2. is there some background job that keeps synchronizing the replica datbase with the backend database.

Can anyone suggest some links/reference documents related to this concept.

There is a transaction MEREP_EX_REPLIC, which does the work. You have to shedule a background job for auto-starting the transaction.

I think the process was explained in details in the MDK.
