Is any/all of EWM functionality available in ECC without installing SCM?

Hi,

Just wondering if any of the EWM functionality is available in ECC or can be made available in ECC through some kind of add-on without installing SCM?

Primarily I'm looking for support of serial numbers.

Does anyone know if this is possible?

Regards,

Mark

If you are primarily looking for serial number info then I feel there is a drawback in ECC.

ECC WM cannot track bin level details of a serial number.Serial numbers can only be traked at an IM level.

In order to have the same functionality as EWM in ECC we need to either implement HUM with lot of customization to track the serial number to a bin level.

Also one of my clients used the same serial number in the batch field instead of the batch number when doing goods movement as we can track batch numbers in SAP WM but this is not a good practise it is just a way to beat the serial number flaw in SAP WM.

Thanks for your comments. Yes I completely agree that ECC WM is limited in relation to serial numbers. There are numerous workarounds, all of which are very ordinary.

I was hoping that someone might be able to answer if the EWM functionality is only available through SCM or if some of the functionality is inherently available in ECC.

For example, cross-docking is considered an EWM function however there is configuration available in ECC to set this up without SCM. Likewise for VAS.

I was hoping perhaps there was some kind of add-in to include serial numbers without installing and setting up SCM?

Hi,

as you have noticed already: not possible. Also the other features you mentioned (Cross-docking, VAS), are developed for WM first - now they are parts of EWM, but very different from the ones in WM.

There is a full installation guide on setting up EWM on the same client as ERP as an add-on.....

Hi Mark,

EWM is available as an add on to ECC, when it is acticated the functionallity remains the same i.e. a decentralised warehouse system but running on the same instance as the ECC system. As such it is not possable to acivate part of EWM and use just the serial number management.

It should also be stated that WM and WM with the TRM layer can be functionally rich and simply modified to handle serial numbers. For instance we have modified the customers systems

To scan and manage IMEA serial numbers (mobile phone identification numbers) and IP (intelectual property) tracking in pick and packing transactions with great sucsses.

My recomendation would be to consider making small modifications to the standard WM system so that it can manage serial numbers if you have discounted the other benifits you would get from implementing EWM.

James,

Thanks for the answer - after a bit more investigation I realised that the "add-on" function is in fact just installing EWM on the same instance.... so probably a bit more effort than I was hoping for.

Unfortunately making modifications to the standard WM system to cater for serial numbers is not so simple if you want to track serial numbers at a bin level - in fact it is very complicated.

Time for a workaround.

Regards,

Mark.

Hello Mark,

EWM is total different approach in WM and I guess this is not available with addon. When we implement EWM , you need to have ECC in place. For one of the client we have used HUM in WM. Here we utilised serial number functionality.

I believe you can use serial number by implementing WM with HUM.

Hope this helps.
