I want to convert a string to a date but do nothing when no text value

I've been able to successfully convert a text string to a date format using CDate(). However, if there is no text present in the field than an error is issued when the report is run ("Bad Date format string"). Also, it appears that my database does not consider the field to have a Null value even if no text has been entered in it. I'd like to only convert the text to a date if there is text present. I will ensure that when text is entered it is in the format, "January 1, 2011" for example. How do I edit the formula such that Crystal does not throw off an error if there is no text present in the field?
