Hi All,

We are running ECC 6 EHP4. we are planning to upgrade Maxdb 7.7.04.28 to 7.8.02.23.

Please advice for the below points.

Can we upgrade our Dev first after observing for some days can we upgrade QTY and PRD after that onwards.

But at the same time we will be having DB versions difference in the landscape. Will it affect the normal day to day developments.

AS in MAXDB upgrade software in SMP it is showing the below softwares for download.

MAXDB7802_23-10007786.SAR MAXDB 7.8.02.23 Server Package

MAXDBART7802_23-10007786.SAR MAXDB 7.8.02.23 Application Runtime Package

MAXWEBJ7802_23-10007786.SAR MAXDB 7.8.02.23 Web Services Package

As per my understanding we required MAXDB 7.8.02.23 Server Package package. But please guide me for MAXDB 7.8.02.23 Application Runtime Package and MAXDB 7.8.02.23 Web Services Package package. For what purpose these packages are used.

Do we required to upgrade these packages also in our scenario.

Regards,

Sahil

Hi,

1) we upgrade our Dev first after observing for some days can we upgrade QTY and PRD after that onwards.

But at the same time we will be having DB versions difference in the landscape. Will it affect the normal day to day developments.

==> This is ok. There will not be any issues with having differenet DB versions in same landscape.

2) You will need only MAXDB7802_23-10007786.SAR MAXDB 7.8.02.23 Server Package .

Other packages are not relevant for ECC 6.0 application.

Hi Deepak,

Thanks for sharing the valueale info. Please advice on the below points.

1. Is thier any SAP note that states we can have DB different version in landscape.

2.Please advice for what purpose MAXDB 7.8.02.23 Application Runtime Package and MAXDB 7.8.02.23 Web Services Package package are being used .

3.Where we can check if any bug in 7.8.02.23 reported as of now.

4. As i checked in Maxdb Upgrade as per the guide "<SAP MaxDB DVD>/DATA_UNITS/MAXDB_UPDATE/DBUPDATE.SH" will avialble in the the download 7.8.02.23 .But i found SDBINST , SDBRUN , SDBSETUP , SDBUPD executabes in the 7.8.02.23.

Please suggest which executable to be used as DBUPDATE.SH is not avialable in the downloaded software.

Sahil

No - because the SAP system itself is totally agnostic about the underlying database system. You can even have different databases (MaxDB + Oracle) in your landscape.

> 2.Please advice for what purpose MAXDB 7.8.02.23 Application Runtime Package and MAXDB 7.8.02.23 Web Services Package package are being used .

The first a package for application servers only, the second one is to enable web access for the MaxDB through SAPMMC.

> 3.Where we can check if any bug in 7.8.02.23 reported as of now.

http://service.sap.com/webpts

Execute

./SDBUPD -u control,<controllpassword> -d <SID>

to upgrade the database. No DBUPDATE.SH needed. (DBUPDATE.SH calls that command).

Hi Marus,

Thanks for your reply.

Please suggest SDBUPD will upgrade the MAXDB binaries and DATA Volumes Both.

As in Oracle we have to first upgrade Oracle Binaries using runnstaller and after that using DBUA we are upgrading data files.

There is no "upgrade of data volumes". DBUPDATE.SH calls SDBUPD. This will stop the database, upgrade the binaries and start the database. During the startup migrations of views etc. will be done automatically. After this is finished SDBUPD loads the system tables (this could be compared by running catproc/catupg.sql on Oracle). After that you're done.

Salil (or Markus),

Did any of your SAP instances exist on the same host ? I am upgrading to 7.8.02.27 but both development ECC5 and QA ECC5 are Central Instance installs on the same host (on HP-UX). The MaxDB upgrade guide says that 7.8 has 'isolated installations' but doesn't say whether this is supported while upgrading to 7.8. Has anybody run an upgrade to MaxDB 7.8 on one SAP instance on the host, but kept another instance on the same host on the old version (7.6.04.11 in my case) ?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Regards,

James.
