Extending the BW metadata

I am trying to gather information on how easy it is to extend an existing SAP DB BW data model to include custom information.

I would also like to understand if a web application can be built to sit on top of the BW reporting system (sort of a catalog of reports that are contingent upon a user's role).

I have a very cursory knowledge of SAP in general, but assume that the DB layer is a robust relational DB that can be extended easily to include custom data?

Can someone please provide me with some information?

    Hello Ryan,

in the subject you mention "metadata", but in your post it sounds like you want to extend the BW data model, which is something different.

The metadata model itself can not be changed. However, the metadata is obviously changable and depends on how BW is configured.

The BW data model is fully extendable. SAP provides data models out of the box (so called Business Content) but you can change it or define the models yourself.

Indeed, BW runs on top of a relational DB. However, you never directly work in the DB layer. You work only with the UI and tools provided by SAP BW. This is much easier and faster than working within the DB layer (The DB part is generated by SAP BW during configuration or execution time).
