We would like to do encryption to some highly sensitive payroll data. Is encryption possible while sending messages through XI?

at connection level, yes. ssl for example. check "security guide" and "configuration guide"
at message level, only rnif adapter can do that.

You could also use a Java Mapping within XI to encrypt the message and send it across to the receiver.
A more sophisticated approach would be to add a module processor into the Sender adapter.
