Flexible UI in "Discussions for Resources"

Hi,

It looks like the defaul discussions iview, does not contain flexible UI elements and its interface is hardcoded in java instead. But, discussiongroups iview allows us to play with the ui . Is there a way to change the default discussions' ui without any development in portal ?
