SLD usage across different engines

Hi All,

I keep seeing refernce of SLD while the message being processed at different engines - Adapter engine , Integration engine, BP engine etc.,

However i don't know as to the purpose for which the call to SLD is made at different stages of message processing.

Please highlight the same if you know of the same.
