ODBC export field length issue

To all

I'm pulling data from the company iSeries and creating a CR XI report. This report is then exported back to the iSeries. The problem is that the fields on the CR report all have set lengths (most of them are 45 characters long). But when I examine the file exported back to the iSeries the field lengths have more than doubled in size (most of them have changed to 92 characters long). What do I need to do to prevent this.
