Hi Frank,

yes, it will improve, but I believe you should focus on memory tunning and parameters optimization according to your hardware, operation system and database. Focus specifically on memory and DB parameterizing - there are plenty of notes for this in SAP resources.

Upgrading kernels is mostly required to fix bugs and bring enhancements to SAP systems. Depending on your landscape, you'll barely notice a performance improvemente if you only updates it. But if you perform a complete tune up like I said above, end users will surely notice a boost on their daily tasks.

As for an upgrade, it's recommended to bring your system to the latest kernel before the procedure, altough this is not mandatory. But it will not improve the ugprade performance for sure, this depends mostly on using the latest upgrade tools, fix upgrade file, DB statistics up-to-date and a correctly set up of the number of process in uptime and downtime.

Lastly, you can find a complete change log for each kernel version in SAP MarketPlace. For example:

https://websmp107.sap-ag.de/~form/handler?_APP=00200682500000001043&_EVENT=INFO&INFONR=0120025231000...

(this is the change log for SAPEXEDB_146-20001829.SAR - the kernel 700 patch level 146 for Solaris64 on X86_64 + Oracle. Note that each version change is documented in a SAP note)

I hope this information helps.
