back-end BW only shows dimension technical name other than description

Hi,

I just begin to use BW NW version and found a potential problem in its back-end BW system.

My colleague defined some dimensions in front-end of BPC, specifying technical name and description.

But when I logon back-end BW, underneath the application set (i.e,infoarea), those dimensions (i.e. infoobject) only show technical name as description, other than its real description defined in BPC front-end.

For example, I defined company code in BPC with technical name ZPM_COMPCODE and description "Company code" but in BW corresponding infoobject only show ZPM_COMPCODE as description.

I wonder if it's a common issue for BPC NW or do i need to further activity to correct it?

Thank you for any comment.

Hi Brad,

While creating any appset, application or dimension, the BI/BW system creates its own technical name having specific nomenclatures.

Therefore, the ID which we give in BPC is displayed as description in BI/BW anivironment. Hope this answers your question.

Does anyone in SAP look it at as a potential problem?

It doesn't make too much sense because usually the name defined in BPC is abbreviation only which is not easy to understand from BW side. After all, we still need to run DTP to update relevant dimension(infoobject).

Especially, we use Asian language to log on, it's confused for end-user to understand object in BW without a concrete description.

If it's not a bug listed, I expect SAP could improve it in next release.

Hi Brad,

It sounds like you think that you need to manage the BPC objects created in BW. This is not the case. The BPC objects in BW are managed by the BPC application and you never need to touch them. They are not loaded by DTPs and should not generally be edited from BW. You would want to load data from within BPC using Data Manager. This holds true for everything you see in the CPMB namespace in RSA1.

Does that help clarify? I don't think most people see the BW technical names as a problem, and hopefully this helps explain why that is.

Cheers,

Ethan

Hi,

This is quite usual. The name of the dimension becomes the description of the BI infoobject an it creates a new technical name for the infoobject.

Hope this helps.
